Slough? Why Slough?

So our first stop in the UK was Slough. Known for… the location of the the fictional Wernham Hogg paper company in the UK version of The Office. It’s also the home to Sir William Herschel (1738-1822 ) who is credited with discovering the planet Uranus in 1781.

No, Really – Why Slough?

We got asked this question a lot over the week we spent in Slough. The local folk seemed shocked that Americans would choose Slough as part of their vacation.

The real purpose for choosing Slough was that it was fairly close to London and it’s many car dealerships, without the London hotel/meal/everything prices. Since we would be in the UK for up to six months, it was cost-prohibitive to hire a rental car. So we bought a used car. Isn’t it pretty?

Luckily for us, USAA insurance will cover us pretty much wherever we travel. We’ll be selling it at the end of June, probably to the people we bought it from — they said they would be happy to buy it back.

World Cuisine

We enjoyed several local pubs and restaurants and had our first introduction to Sunday Roast. Yum! Slough has a very diverse population so there are many different cuisines to choose from. We liked Santorini Gyros, Mood & Spoon, Incredible India, and the King’s Head.

Next Up, Oxford

Equipped with our “estate” car, we had plenty of room for all our stuff and were ready to head to our next destination, Oxford.
